The Ottawa Grassroots Festival is not just about great music. At the 2025 Ottawa Grassroots Festival there are three workshops on Saturday, April 26th, that you will not want to miss. Gardening, Ukulele playing and Songwriting are all on our list.
Gardening Workshop (Ed Lawrence)
The Gardening Workshop, led by Gardening Guru Ed Lawence, begins at 12:45 PM in the Workshop Room (Room 6). Ed has participated in the OGF several times before and always draws a crowd.
On Saturday, Ed Lawrence will talk about gardening and answer all your questions, sharing expert advice drawn from decades of hands-on experience, including his time as Chief Horticulturist at Rideau Hall. Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or just starting out with your first houseplant, Ed’s approachable style and deep knowledge make him the perfect guide. From dealing with stubborn weeds to choosing the right plants for your soil type, no question is too big or too small. Bring your curiosity—and maybe a photo or two of your garden—and get ready to dig into practical tips that will help your plants thrive.
Don’t miss this opportunity to up your gardening game!
Ukulele Workshop (Arthur McGregor)
The Ukulele Workshop, led by multi-instrumentalist Arthur McGregor, begins at 2:45 PM in the Workshop Room (Room 6). Arthur has been deeply involved in folk music in Ottawa for over 35 years.
On Saturday, Arthur says, “You will learn how to play ‘O Canada’ on the ukulele. You don’t need to bring a ukulele as I will loan you one for the workshop. Who doesn’t want to sing and play O Canada?!?”
So, if you ever wanted to learn something about playing a ukulele, now is your chance!! You don’t have to bring an instrument, just a willingness to learn and have some fun.
Songwriting Workshop (Lynn Miles)
The Songwriting Workshop, led by award winning Singer-Songwriter, Lynn Miles begins at 4:15 PM in the NOW Room. Lynn Miles has 16 albums to her credit and has written almost all the songs on all of them. Her songwriting credentials are significant!
On Saturday, Lynn says, “I’ll give a brief description of my approach to songwriting and then we’ll focus on you. What are your questions, struggles. Bring an instrument if you have a song you want to discuss…although there might not be enough time to get to everyone.”
Maybe you’re a budding songwriter who just needs some specific insights to get to that next level. Or maybe you just want to understand how a professional approaches writing a new song. Either way this workshop will be enlightening and engaging.
